Abstract
This study was done to investigate the effect of deep sea water (DSW) containing low molecular weight chitosan (LMC) on alcohol-metabolizing enzymes activities in ICR mice. The mice were orally administered 25% ethanol (alcohol group), 25% ethanol and DSW (hardness 0 or 1,500) (DSW group), 25% ethanol and DSW (hardness 0 or 1,500) containing LMC (2.5 mg/ 0.3 mL/day) (DSW containing LMC group) for 3 weeks. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity was increased in the DSW (hardness 1,500) containing LMC group compared to the alcohol and DSW group. Also, in the DSW (hardness 1,500) containing LMC group, Microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities showed significantly increasing tendency compared to the other groups. The blood alcohol content was lower due to the increased activities of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes (ADH, MEOS, and ALDH) in the DSW (hardness 1,500) containing LMC group. These results suggest that the DSW (hardness 1,500) containing LMC may alleviate ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity by altering alcoholmetabolizing enzymes activities.
